Over the past 20 years, amino acid analysis methods based on precolumn derivatization procedures have become a popular alternative to the traditional postcolumn derivatization techniques based on ion-exchange separation of the underivatized amino acids. The major reasons for this include greater sensitivity, faster analyses, and the ability to use less expensive, more flexible HPLC instrumentation rather than dedicated amino acid analyzers.
